Probably Peter Murphy, although you do specify some sort of modern artist reference, so i'll say Steve Vai or Joe Satriani, depends on my mood.

Well... the best composer in the world (and God of bass) was Cliff Burton. But he's no longer with us, leaving me to choose... Dave Mustaine, alltough he's been slaking off lately.
